Press Alt + F9 to reveal the field codes or Shift + F9 to reveal only the currently selected field code. The easiest way to tell Word to display a pages number somewhere on the page is to insert a field code as follows. Often, you’ll want to see the field code and perhaps change it. Next to the text that appears in the table of contents, you now see a TC field without a page number. Normally, Word shows the result of the field code unless you click inside it, then it turns to gray. You probably have seen this one in different documents and even books. On the Display tab, select the Show all formatting marks check box, and then select OK. Step 2: click View tab, check any formatting marks in Formatting marks section to show them in document, or you can check All item to show all kinds of formatting marks in document. Once you check this option, the stuff you put in the header of the first page won't appear on other pages and conversely, if you change the header of any other page it won't affect the first page. Step 1: click Tools menu > click Options. In the Header & Footer Tools tab, in the Options section, check Different First Page. So far, anything that you add to the header will appear on every other page but what if you don't want the header on your first page to appear on every page in the document? You might want to have other content in the header of other pages or anything else. This tab allows you to change options related to the header and also insert components other than plain text to it. The Header & Footer Tools tab activates whenever you're editing the header or the footer of a page.
